Dr. Gregory Chesnut
Dr. Gregory T. Chesnut, MD, FACS, is a nationally recognized urologic oncologist, military physician leader, and prostate cancer specialist serving as the Director of the Center for Prostate Disease Research (CPDR) and Director of Urologic Oncology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, home to the Department of Defense’s Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence. He also serves as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
As Prostate Health Clinical Advisor for The BrightPath Foundation, Dr. Chesnut provides strategic clinical guidance supporting the Foundation’s mission to reduce prostate cancer mortality disparities through evidence-based wellness education, movement, nutrition, survivorship support, and community engagement. His involvement helps ensure that The BrightPath Foundation educational resources and wellness initiatives remain aligned with credible medical science, patient-centered care, and emerging standards in prostate cancer treatment and survivorship.
Dr. Chesnut leads one of the nation’s premier multidisciplinary prostate cancer programs, where clinicians, scientists, researchers, and healthcare professionals collaborate to advance personalized care, translational research, and clinical innovation for patients diagnosed with or at risk for prostate cancer. Under his leadership, the CPDR continues to support the Department of Defense’s global prostate cancer clinical and research mission for active-duty service members, military retirees, veterans, and beneficiaries worldwide.
A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Dr. Chesnut earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, completed his urology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and pursued advanced fellowship training in Urologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he was selected to lead the Prostate Cancer Working Group and Genitourinary Oncology Grand Rounds.
Dr. Chesnut has extensive expertise in prostate, bladder, kidney, testicular, adrenal, and other genitourinary cancers. His clinical practice includes advanced open, laparoscopic, endoscopic, and robotic surgical techniques, combined with a strong commitment to improving patient quality of life and long-term survivorship outcomes. He serves as Principal Investigator for multiple clinical trials and research protocols and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and academic contributions in the field of urologic oncology.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Chesnut is also a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology and the American Urological Association. In addition, he serves as the Navy Specialty Leader for Urology, advising senior Navy leadership on policy, clinical readiness, and urologic healthcare delivery across the military health system.
Through his partnership with The BrightPath Foundation, Dr. Chesnut supports the advancement of community-centered wellness initiatives that encourage early screening, informed decision-making, purposeful wellness, survivorship empowerment, and improved long-term health outcomes for men and families affected by prostate cancer.
